VTCT Level 4 or fast-track?

Regulated qualification or a quicker start? Here's how VTCT Level 4 courses and fast-track courses compare.

When you start looking at semi-permanent makeup training, you’ll quickly notice two kinds of course. Some are VTCT Level 4 qualifications that run over several days. Others are fast-track courses of one to five days that lead to a CPD certificate. Both can launch a successful career, but they suit different people and plans. Here’s how to decide.

What is a VTCT Level 4 course?

VTCT is an awarding body for qualifications in beauty, hair and aesthetics. A VTCT Level 4 course leads to a regulated qualification, which means it sits on the national qualifications framework and follows a set syllabus with formal assessment.

At LV College, Level 4 options include Microblading and Micropigmentation, both run over six days in small classes, plus Lip Blush, Scalp Micropigmentation and Skin Microneedling.

Level 4 courses usually build on knowledge of skin and body systems, which is why the online VTCT Level 3 Anatomy and Physiology award is designed for students planning them.

What the training looks like

Level 4 courses mix theory with plenty of practical time. You’ll typically cover skin anatomy, hygiene, consultation and colour theory, watch your tutor demonstrate each technique, practise on artificial skins, then treat live models under supervision before you’re assessed. Some courses use a blended format: the Skin Microneedling course, for example, starts with an online webinar day before two days of practical training. Small classes mean your tutor can watch your technique closely and correct it as you go.

Why choose Level 4?

  • A recognised qualification that you can show to employers, clinics and insurers.
  • More depth, with more time for theory, practice and assessment.
  • A strong foundation for progressing to advanced work, such as Level 5 specialist courses, some of which require a Level 4 qualification.

What is a fast-track course?

Fast-track courses focus on getting you practising a specific technique quickly. They’re shorter, run in small classes, and lead to a CPD and insurance-approved certificate rather than a regulated qualification.

Examples include the two-day NB1 Microblading course, the five-day NB2 EMBO and Korean Nanoblading course and the three-day NB5 EMBO Micropigmentation course.

Why choose fast-track?

  • A quicker start, with less time away from work or family.
  • A focused skill, ideal if you know exactly which treatment you want to offer.
  • A lower upfront commitment, with the option to add more courses later.

How to decide

Think about where you’ll work. If you plan to join a clinic or salon, ask what they expect. Some prefer regulated qualifications. If you’ll run your own business, check what your insurer and local council require.

Think about your experience. If you’re brand new to beauty, the depth of a Level 4 course can build confidence. If you already work in beauty or SPMU, a fast-track course can add a new technique efficiently.

Think about your goals. If you see yourself progressing to advanced or paramedical work, such as Level 5 nipple and areola tattooing, a Level 4 qualification is the natural stepping stone.

Think about time and budget. Fast-track courses are shorter and cost less upfront. Level 4 courses take longer but give you a qualification with wider recognition. Ask about payment plans if spreading the cost would help.

You don’t have to choose forever

Many artists start with a fast-track course to test the waters, build a client base, then take a Level 4 qualification later. Others start with Level 4 and add fast-track courses for extra techniques, such as eyeliner and lip blush or colour correction. Both routes can work, as long as you keep practising and keep learning.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is the course regulated, or does it lead to a CPD certificate?
  • How many days of practical training are included?
  • Are live models provided, and how many will I work on?
  • Is a kit included?
  • Are there entry requirements, such as the Level 3 Anatomy and Physiology award?
